I remember reading somewhere that the amount of money spent on the Iraq war could have halted poverty for 4-7 years (providing everyone with food, education, housing etc). But no, that money has to be spent on worsening lives rather than improving them...

I think it's because they believe that they're doing the right thing. The American government has capitalized on this (like everything else) and basically plastered "...FOR FREEDOM!!!" onto anything Iraq war related. I suppose it is one big cult. Some people call it Christianity. It's done over here too (fight for your country, God save the queen etc.) but it's not as severe as in the USA.
